We offer a large selection of shaft and tube assemblies. The shafts are made from grade 303 stainless steel, and the tubes are normaly brass. Stainless tubes are also available for some diameters of shaft. Standard bearing material is leaded bronze , but we also make shafts with stainless ball races. Please see the price list for the options available. Standard thread sizes are M2, M3, M4, M5 and M6. D1 drives: The D1 consists of a cast aluminium housing machined to accept a motor and line it up directly with the drive shaft. Like the standard shafts, they are made in various lengths. They are supplied fitted with tube, M4 shaft with straight coupling, and mounting screws for the motor. D1’s are available in sizes to suit 400, 540, 700 or 800 size motors. Couplings: After throwing out numerous designs, I have come up with the style of coupling you see illustrated, which I call the knuckle joint. It consists of a stainless steel ball with two bronze halves which snap over it. These are so shaped that they rotate around each other whilst transmitting power through up to 20 degrees of angle. They are not intended for very high power/high speed, but work well for medium duty scale or fast electric.
For higher power applications, we have the 'dog and bone style' coupling illustrated, which will take big motor shafts (typically 8mm dia.) and very high speeds and torques. As with any coupling, it is always good practice to minimise angles in the drive train, as it saves power and cuts noise.
